I swear if traveling was free, you would never see me again. But it’s not. And as much as I would like to be traveling non stop for every day of the year that is just not how it works.
I could be cutting down costs while traveling to the bare minimum and still would not be getting out of at least having some savings in my bank account. Saving up is not always the easiest thing to do but it helps to have a clear idea of what you will spend your money and to have something to look forward to. For you that might be a new bag or a car, but for me that will always be traveling.
It does not really matter what you will end up spending your savings on but here are some tips on how I personally have been saving up money for the past year to be able to afford my summer travels.
1. Get a job
I’m guessing this is obvious. You can’t be saving up money if you can’t even cover your daily expenses such as food and electricity. Maybe you are studying and you do not think you have time to work at all, well that’s too bad.
You do have to set your priorities but also working a lot while studying has helped me so much in sticking to my own deadlines, getting more stuff done and just managing my time better in general. I am also a lot busier, spend less time watching Netflix and do not really have a lot of time left to go shopping or spend my money otherwise. It really has been beneficial in so many ways.
2. Sell stuff online
I really hate throwing stuff away. Before I do that I will have spent hours and hours trying to sell my stuff online. From clothes to computer games to books to old Pokemon cards, I have managed to get rid of most of my stuff on eBay while getting a few euros that I could put into my travel account.
It might be a little annoying to take pictures of all your stuff and then having to run to the post office every now and then but I do really enjoy it. It’s like cleaning out my closet and getting rid of things also helps me getting my head cleared up a little, not sure if that is weird.
3. Budgeting
Budgeting is key! I do not have a daily budget but a weekly one. I usually spend about 50 euros a week on groceries, toiletries, transportation or whatever else I need to buy, which adds up to about 200 euros a month. I have no idea if that is a lot or not.The only thing left out in this calculation is rent and books for university.
So if I spend more than my weekly budget in one week I have to be a little careful in the following week and so on. Planning out my budget has helped me to better figure out what I spent my money on and I have been able to save up money every month.
4. Online Surveys
These won’t make your rich but you can get a little extra money when spending some time on online surveys. Since they usually pay out in gift cards it’s a great way for me to buy some small things that I want but don’t really need and I don’t have to spend my actual savings on it.
It will take a couple of months and you have to be signed up for a lot of different survey websites but it still kind of cool. Online surveys have paid for most of my Go Pro accessories, such as my Go Pro scuba diving filters.
5. Cut down expenses
You can sell your entire closet but if you spend all your new income on new clothes it won’t get you that far in terms of savings. Unless of course that was what you were saving up for in the beginning it is always helpful to cut down your own expenses. If I don’t really need it and it is not included in my weekly budget than I just can’t buy it. Simple as that. And to be honest when I am actually living from my own money I am a lot more careful what I spend my money on.
6. Keep yourself busy
This honestly has been the most useful thing to do for myself personally when trying to save money. Since I started this blog about two months ago I do have to spend some time on it every now and then even though I can’t really keep up all the time anyway. But planning my time better, when I need to write, when do go to the gym, when to study and just keeping myself busy in general has made days and weeks fly by so quickly that I just did not had a lot of time to spend money.
7. Bike more often
I wish this would get me anywhere near my summer body but it’s just helping me spend a little less money since I have to pay every time to take my bike on the train. Not sure how you are getting around but transportation is expensive, instead of trains or cars, try biking or walking sometimes if the distance allows is.
